The year after its 150th anniversary, last month, Arnold Dettling AG was awarded the title of “World Class Distillery” for the 11th time and received its 6th special “Distillery of the Year” award. The “Spirit of the Year” award went to Brunnen once again this year ― this time with other products from Arnold Dettling AG, which ranks as one of the three best distilleries worldwide.
Arnold Dettling AG, one of the most specialised cherry brandy distilleries in the world, has extended the Dettling range with the new product “Vieille Kirsch Brandy”.
New product “Vieille Kirsch Brandy” awarded gold, a sensory revelation “flying blind”
“Vieille” products, also known as “Vieille Prune” and “Vieille Poire” and colloquially also as “alte Zwetschge” and “alte Birne”, are spirits which, according to the food regulations, fall into the category of liqueurs. For the spirit producer, this is a creative field for free experimentation, where the use of sugar, flavourings and colour additives are permitted.
However, Arnold Dettling AG in Brunnen is following a radical new approach and over the past three years has been developing a Vieille cherry brandy for cigar lovers. This is a cherry brandy stored in demijohn bottles, made from small mountain cherries grown in Central Switzerland, and subsequently left to mature in new mulberry wooden barrels. Storing in wooden barrels is always “flying blind” as the quality of the barrel determines the ultimate result. As a distiller, one has to be patient and wait from a few months to years until the aroma from the wooden barrels is imparted into the brandy.
Harmonious notes ― a feast for the senses
The latest Dettling Vieille Kirsch brandy, a gold award winner, develops a golden amber colour during storage. The delicate sweetness, subtle dryness and hints of marzipan are heavenly perfection in endless harmony e.g. when smoking a Cuban cigar. Complexity, body, smell and taste come together like a well tuned philharmonic orchestra when enjoying a Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchill cigar.
Dettling Wildkirsche wins Double Gold and “Brandy of the Year” award(s)
With 95.7% out of 100 points, Dettling won the very rare double gold award at World Spirits 2018. With this high score, Dettling also received the “Spirit of the Year” award, i.e. the “best spirit in the world”. It is important for customers to know that for one litre of Wildkirsche brandy with 40% volume, a minimum 6,500 finest wild cherries have to be picked. Or for connoisseurs: 130 wild cherries are used to make 2 cl of Wildkirsche. It soon becomes apparent why restaurants are allowed to charge between 20.00 to 25.00 francs for a glass of Wildkirsche brandy.
Other Gold Awards
Arnold Dettling AG (also) wins / has also won the Dettling Supérieux Vieux, Dettling Réserve, single origin Lauerzer Cherry Brandy Dettling and Dettling barrel matured Cherry Brandy.
